Multiple tooth extractions might be required after an accident or injury where several teeth have been severely fractured or knocked out. If left unchecked, tooth decay can also damage a tooth so badly that even a root canal cannot repair it completely.
Advanced periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, can cause a loss of material in the bones that anchor some of your teeth to your jaw. This can lead to infection or even cause system inflammation. In some cases, this condition can affect other medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
Any of these situations might lead your dentist or periodontist to recommend extracting the teeth before an even worse problem develops.
In most cases, X-rays will be taken before hand to assess the severity of the problem or to get a better understanding of a tooth’s relationship to the sinus cavity.
The extraction procedure can usually be done on an outpatient basis. Your dentist or oral surgeon might also prescribe painkillers or anti-inflammatory medication to help with pain management during recovery. If you have a weakened immune system or other medical conditions that put you at risk for an infection, your doctor or dentist might prescribe antibiotics to be taken before or after the extraction procedure.
Once you are healed, your dentist can advise you on your options for replacing the lost teeth. This might include dental implants, a dental bridge, partial dentures or complete dentures.
