Tooth loss often results in bone loss. In many cases there can be so much missing structure that a dental implant can’t be securely anchored in place. In order to remedy this problem, Village Pointe Oral Surgery will need to install a bone graft into your jaw.
At your initial consultation, one of our oral surgeons will examine your mouth and jaw to assess the available bone structure. This often includes taking some X-rays or performing a CT scan. It’s important to let them know about any medications you are taking medical conditions that might increase your bleeding risk or slow the healing process.
We often perform a bone graft procedure on an outpatient basis, which usually requires deep sedation. You will need to have a friend or family member drive you and help at home for a while, until you’re completely lucid.
Most bone grafts can be sampled from the sturdy bone or your chin. If you would like it could also be taken from a surgical grade cadaver. During the procedure, your surgeon will create an incision in your gums to gain direct access to the relevant area. The bone graft is inserted into place and the gums are sutured closed. Over time your body will naturally absorb the grafted bone material, making it a part of your overall jaw structure.
Your recovery time will vary depending on your age, overall health and quality of aftercare. Keep in mind that tobacco use will irritate healing gum tissues, which increases recovery time and risk of infection.
